The use of semi enclosed slots results in low tooth pulsation loss and a much quieter operation as compared with that with open slots. WebLook at magnetic circuit of stator (image is for rotor but basic funda is same). If you close the upper part also. All the flux will be confined within stator. None will leave and go to rotor. So, leakage will flux will be very high. The air gap in magnetic circuit causes flux to complete it's path through rotor. So why not use Open slot?
