In the 1900s he became a parish and district councillor and a justice of the peace. Early in 1914 Joseph's scattered 100 acres (400,000 m 2) in Tysoe were exchanged for a 200-acre (0.81 km 2) holding, Coldstone Farm, at Ascott under Wychwood in Oxfordshire, where he died on 4 March 1919.
